Volt (V)
Quantity: Electric potential / Voltage · Category: Derived SI
The volt is the SI unit of electric potential (voltage): one joule of energy per coulomb of charge. It measures how much energy each unit of charge gains or loses moving between two points — named after Alessandro Volta, inventor of the battery.
Relation to SI
1 V = 1 J/C = 1 kg·m²/(s³·A)
Examples
- A AA battery provides about 1.5 volts.
- Household outlets supply 120 or 230 volts depending on the country.
