Farad (F)
Quantity: Capacitance · Category: Derived SI
The farad is the SI unit of capacitance — how much charge a capacitor stores per volt. One farad holds one coulomb at one volt; practical capacitors are usually microfarads or smaller.
Relation to SI
1 F = 1 C/V = 1 A·s/V = 1 A²·s⁴/(kg·m²)
Examples
- Phone circuit capacitors are typically microfarads.
- Camera flash capacitors store charge at hundreds of volts.
- Supercapacitors reach thousands of farads for energy storage.
