Bar (bar)
Quantity: Pressure · Category: Non-SI
The bar is a metric unit of pressure equal to exactly 100,000 pascals — roughly one atmosphere. It is widely used in meteorology, diving and tire pressure because its values stay near convenient whole numbers.
Relation to SI
1 bar = 100,000 Pa = 10⁵ Pa (exact)
Examples
- Sea-level air pressure is about 1.013 bar.
- Car tires are typically inflated to 2.0–2.5 bar.
- Weather maps report pressure in millibars (1 mbar = 1 hPa).
