Higgs Boson
Definition
The particle discovered at CERN in 2012 — a ripple in the Higgs field that fills space and gives particles their mass.
Technical definition
A spin-0 boson of mass ~125 GeV/c², the quantum of the Higgs field, with couplings proportional to particle masses; found via H → γγ and H → ZZ* decays.
Example
The 2012 ATLAS and CMS announcement of a 125 GeV bump completed the Standard Model's particle roster — ending a hunt of nearly 50 years.
Common confusion
The Higgs doesn't supply most of your mass — that comes from gluon binding energy inside protons. The Higgs gives fundamental particles their base masses.
