Fluid Dynamics
Definition
The study of fluids in motion — from airflow over wings to blood in arteries to weather systems.
Technical definition
The branch of fluid mechanics governing moving fluids via conservation of mass, momentum (Navier-Stokes equations), and energy. Covers laminar/turbulent flow, boundary layers, drag, lift, and compressible flow.
Example
Designing a fuel-efficient car means fluid dynamics: shaping the body so airflow stays attached (low drag) instead of separating into turbulent wake.
Common confusion
Fluid dynamics is not just ‘Bernoulli's equation’ — Bernoulli is one simplified case (steady, incompressible, inviscid flow along a streamline). Real flows often need the full Navier-Stokes treatment.
