Free Fall Calculator

Drop an object from height h and it falls with time t = √(2h/g), hitting the ground at v = g·t. Enter any one value to find the other two (they are linked through g = 9.81 m/s²).

t=2hg,v=gtt = \sqrt{\frac{2h}{g}}, \quad v = gt

How to interpret the result

Fall time grows with the square root of height — dropping from 4× the height only doubles the time. Impact velocity grows with the square root of height too, which is why falls get dangerous quickly.

Assumptions

  • Released from rest (initial velocity = 0)
  • No air resistance
  • g = 9.81 m/s², constant over the fall
  • Falling straight down from the given height
